The USS Thresher ANC Memorial Has Been Approved! January 28, 2019

The Secretary of the Army, Dr. Mark Esper, has approved the proposed USS Thresher Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) Memorial.

The memorial is dedicated to the 129 men lost aboard USS Thresher (SSN-593) on April 10, 1963 while conducting deep dive exercises 220 miles off of Cape Cod.

https://threshermemorial.org/…/uss-thresher-monument-image.…

The loss of Thresher was the largest Submarine disaster ever experienced by our Nation, and led to the inception of the Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) program that has, and continues to protect the men and women who serve on our Nations Submarines.

In the 55 years since the inception of SUBSAFE, we have lost only one Submarine, USS Scorpion in what is believed to be due to a battery explosion. In the 46 years prior, we experienced a non-combat average loss rate of one Submarine every 3 years.

The USS Thresher ANC Memorial Foundation received nearly $60,000 in donations from USS Thresher family, USS Thresher former crew, Submarine Veterans, current & former Naval Sea Systems & Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employees. This will cover the cost of the memorial and ensure that funding will be in place to replace the monument in perpetuity.

Led by NH Senator Shaheen, a letter of support for the ANC memorial was sent to the Secretary of the Army signed also by NH Senator Hassan, Maine Senators Collins & King , and Massachusetts Senator Warren.

Led by former NH Congresswoman Carol Shea Porter, a letter of support was sent to the Executive Director, ANC signed by 15 members of the House Armed Services Committee.

The ANC commemorative monuments approval process required six level of approvals. The monument is modest in size, and is designed to be placed along a walkway in a area not suitable for burial.

On behalf of the USS Thresher family & former crew, we would like to thank the ANC representatives who conducted the analysis of our proposal, and provided the lower five levels of approval prior to the final approval signature received today from the Secretary of the Amy.

Report on ANC Advisory Committee, Remember & Explore Subcommittee meetings held Sept. 6th & 7th September 09, 2018

The ANC Remember & Explore Subcommittee met on Thursday, Sept. 6th during which Major Way presented our proposal. Thresher Family member Tom Wiley spoke on our behalf. Tom received positive feedback on our proposal including comments that it was well written and thorough.

There was one question directed to Tom Wiley by a Subcommittee member that the Foundation is currently researching: Is the amount of money currently raised by individual donors ($58,700) sufficient to cover the cost of memorial replacement (the current cost is $4,800) in 100 years after the annual costs of the trust fund maintenance fee and NH Charitable Trust fee are deducted from the interest returned on a multi-year certificate of deposit. After additional research, we may elect to turn back on the fundraising to include Corporate donations this round now that the 501(c)(3) is in place.

The Subcommittee Chairman held off calling a vote on our proposal until their next meeting, expected to be on or near November 7th, to allow time for three new Subcommittee members to get up to speed on the commemorative monument approval process and our proposal.

The ANC Advisory Committee met on Friday, Sept. 7th. They elected to hold off on receiving our 3-minute brief until the Subcommittee votes on it in November. The Advisory Committee is expected to meet after the Subcommittee meeting in November. (November 8th was mentioned).

The dates and times for both November meetings are expected to be published in the Federal Register ~mid October.

A sincere thank you to all who came in person to show your support including the current and former Executive Directors from the Naval Submarine League.

ANC Advisory Committee Meeting This Friday, September 7th. September 05, 2018

The required USS Thresher Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) Commemorative Monument proposal package has been reviewed for legislative compliance by the ANC Commemorative Monuments Working Group (CMWG).

The ANC CMWG members are currently in the process of evaluating the merits of our proposal. Major Shannon Way, ANC Strategic Planner, will present a slide on our proposal to the Remember and Explore Subcommittee on September 6th.

The full ANC Advisory Committee will meet this Friday, September 7th from 1030 to 1400. As part of that meeting and towards the end, the Remember and Explore Subcommittee will present the results of their meeting to the full ANC Advisory Committee, including a slide on our memorial proposal. During the final 15 minutes of the meeting there will be an opportunity for us to make a succinct three minute presentation on the history of Thresher, the men lost, and the impact SUBSAFE has had on our Submarine Force.

We have been allotted 10 seats out the 20 available for the public at the ANC Advisory Committee meeting on September 7th. If you are available, please join with us to demonstrate your support in person. If you plan on attending, please let us know by emailing ThresherMemorial@gmail.com.
